Dear Brother Eric:
I really enjoyed meeting you last week when I stopped by the Chapter House while passing through Tuscaloosa on business. Given Delta Chi's membership growth, plus academic, social, political,
and athletic accomplishments over the past couple of years, it is clear that Delta Chi is alive and well.
You expressed knowledge of our alumni, and quickly mentioned prominent Alabama Delta Chi's:
- Jefferson J Coleman, for whom Alabama's basketball coliseum is named
- Gov. George C Wallace
- Rob Riley, son of current Gov Bob Riley
- Sen. Richard Shelby (R-AL)
- Noah Langdale, Phd, President Emeritus of Georgia State University
- Gary Branch, PhD, President of Faulkner State Community College
- U.S. Circuit Judge Robert Vance
- MGEN Larry Northington, USAF
- Jon Vice, CEO of Children's Healthcare System of Wisconsin and Adjunct Faculty at UAB
- Hoy Taylor, Chairman and CEO of Regions Bank (ret.)
- Ray Pate and Stan Williams, successful businessmen
- Joe Face, Commissioner of Banking for Commonwealth of Virginia
I was in college with a 9-year span of young men (3 years older than freshman year, 3 years younger than senior year, plus two military years in between) who have achieved incredible success in life:
two Air Force Colonels, two Navy Captains and a Commander, two Army Colonels, State Trooper Post Commander, Police Captain, three ministers, two College Presidents, a college Professor, numerous high school teachers and coaches, numerous CPA's and attorneys, numerous doctors and dentists, and many successful business executives and owners.
Perhaps their greatest achievement is one which defies national statistics - all but 6 or 7 of my college fraternity brothers are still married to their first wife.
Delta Chi afforded me these career-building "first jobs": Operations Management (House Manager); Sales Management (Rush Chairman); Organizational Development (Pledge Trainer); Executive (Vice President). Each of these experiences helped prepare me for a career that led to CEO of one company, founder of another, and Board Chairman of two industry trade associations.
Over the past 10 years, our alumni who do not personally know the Student Members have invested hundreds of thousands of dollars in the Chapter House and fraternity. Eric, if you represent Alabama Delta Chi, then we have earned a very attractive Return-on-Investment. Godspeed.
In the Bond,
Bill Crawford, '71
